Archaeological site of Septeuil

During the deviation works of the RD 983 at Septeuil in 1984, a sanctuary of waters of the Gallo-Roman period dating from the 1st to the 4th centuries was found at the place called Féerie, built on the resurgence of a spring. Representations of the god Mythra were discovered there.

It is a rectangular building with walls covered with limestone slabs and white marble with a basin in its center. The sacred room, the cella, had on the wall facing the entrance a niche in which there was an elongated nymph pouring water from a hydria, which then spread into the basin. A copy was placed in the same place. The statue in Carrara marble is in the museum of Saint Germain en Laye. In view of this exceptional discovery, the General Council of Yvelines financed the construction of a restitution of this sanctuary of source (as well as a molding of the statue). During the restoration of the site, in order to allow the visits, it was necessary to move all the sanctuary of a few meters to avoid that it is again silted by the Vaucouleurs. Parking and explanatory tables adjoin the monument which is open to the public throughout the year.
